How do you stay healthy outside?

Davis is an ideal place to enjoy the outdoors. We have a beautiful campus, more than 3 miles of Arboretum trails and a very walkable downtown. Working out is an important part of my daily routine and that usually includes going for a run on campus or nearby.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

The sunshine and fresh air is an immediate mood lifter. After so much time being isolated indoors from the pandemic, getting outside feels more refreshing than ever.

I love going on walks and looking for all the squirrels on campus admiring all the flowers especially since everything is blooming right now.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

School gets really stressful but when I’m outside, it’s my time to not think about my homework and to focus on me. Sometimes I’ll even figure out why I was stumped on a homework problem while I’m out walking.

How do you stay healthy outside?

I like to go on daily walks on the green belt paths around Davis or the Arboretum. The stunning views and wildlife like otters, ducks and most recently goslings, always cheer me up.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I have finally realized that taking breaks is not being lazy and that it is actually part of being productive. For instance, after a walk around my neighborhood, I often feel recharged and ready to finish up some work. In contrast, if I force myself to push through, I usually end up taking longer to finish the task. So now, I try my best to listen to my body and take regular breaks when needed. My favorite way to take a break is visiting our local parks and ponds, especially now when there are goslings around.

Spend my time outside surrounded by nature is an important part of my mental health care. My time outside is usually dedicated to myself; studying, writing in my journal, and meditating are things that I don’t feel comfortable doing indoors.Also, being surrounded by nature keeps me motivated and inspired.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I have social anxiety so I have a really hard time studying in crowned places such as the library and my community center. That’s the reason I’m constantly looking for new “study spots” outside all around campus, specially the arboretum. Spending time outside help me to concentrate better and boost my energy after a long day. This is also my medium to spend time with my friend since I cant be in crowned or noisy places. We organized picnic dates in the arboretum or in the field that is in front of our apartments. All the above are reason why I choose UC Davis. Davis is famous by its pretty campus with beautiful landscape and nature, and its small ‘college town’ as well.

I love to do all my studying outside, whether it be outside the MU, at central park, or in the courtyard of my apartment building. It gives me a chance to go on a walk before and after, and to enjoy the sunlight!

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I am always able to focus better in fresh air, and if walking to a nearby park can be incorporated into my busy school schedule, I am able to find a better balance between time to focus and time to decompress. Plus, when I am able to walk to class, or take a slightly longer route through scenic parts of davis like the arboretum, I love to be reminded of what a gorgeous campus and city I am in, which helps with my gratitude and mental health! And I get pretty pictures to go along with it all :)

I like to go on walks and explore. Recently, I attended the Environmental Club’s field trip to visit the California Academy of Sciences and grow my knowledge. I go to downtown almost every week and try something new. Turns out most students have no clue of the craft fair that goes on every other Sunday at the farmers market square!

Spending time outside provides an escape from the overwhelming stress that accompanies higher education. It is important to take a step away from your duties and take a moment to breathe, exercise, and release some endorphins.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I had severe myopia and got a surgery. I stay infront of my computer from 8-5 on most days. My eyes get tired and so does my body sitting in my office. The only thing I look forward after my hectic day is to spend sometime outside the house in the nature. It is important to spend time outside to calm myself and heal my drained soul. I forget all my stress when I am spending time outside. My mental health feels better outside and I want to prioritize my mental health above anything.

For me being in contact with the nature is something that I enjoy a lot and is like therapy for me. Instead of being in my dorm with the AC on I rather be feeling the natural air. I LOVE NATURE.

I go on walks with my dog and I love to hike! Picnicking is also a favorite activity!

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

Going outside and distancing myself from technology is my favorite way to clear my head when I’m stressed. I just take a walk and when I come back to my dorm, I already feel calmer and more focused. It’s a free way to relieve stress! Who wouldn’t want to spend time outdoors? It’s also the best way for me to spend quality time with my dog, Lily.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I started kayaking on Wednesdays during COVID with two of my best friends. Being outside keeps me centered and the rhythm and effort of paddling clears out the mental fatigue. Taking the time to be present to experience the seasons, the wildlife, and the nuances of the waterways in this region has been hugely rewarding. There is so much biodiversity right here in Yolo/Solano/Sacramento counties that we often marvel that we seem to be the only humans out on the water in the sloughs, canals, lakes, and rivers.

The outside world helps to make my family feel...well, grounded. It connects us to the natural world. I watch as my 9-year-old slows down, looks up and connects with this non-digital space. My husband's worry lines across his forehead begin to soften. My shoulders lower, I breathe deeper and get out of my head and really into the outside. There are so many many reasons why this is important. For our physical and metal well-being. And for our the wellness our of family connection. We do better in our individual selves when we feel most connected to each other.

How do you stay healthy outside?

I like to make sure I can get outside at least once a day. Usually I do this by either substituting a drive with a bike ride instead or majority of the time I will take a study break/take my studies outside by setting up my picnic blanket at either Central Park or at the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden for some time to take in the sun. On days that are hard for me to get outside, I take a small walk around my apartment complex just to make sure I can get some fresh air, even if it’s something small like that.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

It’s important for me to spend time outside for my mental health. I feel like the sun energizes me and gives me the motivation to continue my day (or even night). Feeling the air and the sun on my skin helps me keep my sanity.

How do you stay healthy outside?

My favorite thing on Davis are the greenhouses we have! I love being able to visit them, and explore the different plants we have in there! To be healthy outside for me is also having picnics with my friends in certain places at Davis and being able to explore our campus and local scenery we have. I love to visit the farmers market and collect fresh produce from the student farm when I can. Having an EBT card has allowed me to afford the produce from the farmers market and encouraged me to explore different ways to buy produce! I especially love to go on adventures with friends and look around our campus and around Davis!

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I think going outside has really helped me with my mental health. I’m able to relax and enjoy times with friends and also distract myself with the beauty of the plant life we have at Davis. Whenever I need a pick-me-up I love to go to the Greenhouse, because I love walking around the different plants and just being able to have a moment with the environment and myself. In that way I’ve been able to combat stress and it has really helped me.

I enjoy going on walks with my dog because not only does it provide me with my daily exercise it helps expanding his life as well. But also outside of that I enjoy traveling with my family and when we travel we only walk in order to see the sights and explore a community.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

Last school year when everything was basically closed on campus all I did was stay in room. It was during that time I became more depressed and felt trapped but once I was able to go outside and enjoy the things I use to my mood elevated and I started to do better in school. Therefore being outside is highly important for not only my mental health but my ability to function in life.

I always try and give myself at least 15 minutes of being outside in the sun every day. I'll try and take a walk, but on especially hot days there is nothing better than putting down a blanket and enjoying the breeze and sun and nature. This helps my stay healthy mentally which to me is just as important as staying healthy physically.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

With the pandemic, and working 8hrs indoors, I feel it's especially important to prioritize time outside. Taking a walk, or sitting in the sun helps me feel grounded mentally and physically, and I think that's really important right now.

I am a beekeeper, so the way I like to stay healthy outside is by going out to the hives and doing basic maintenance and care for the honey bees. A lot of it is physical work but it doesn’t feel like it when you are outside listening to the buzzing.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

It keeps me grounded. Being outside with the honey bees and hearing the buzz all around me while I watch them work improves my mental health. We take things for granted and are always in a rush, so it’s really motivating to see how they get things done and work together without a worry.

My chronic illness doesn’t allow for a lot but, I love to meander wherever I have to go. Walking, I’m able to improve my physical health but also my mental by stopping to look at squirrels or to smell a new patch of jasmine that I found.

Like a plant, I photosynthesize. I need to sunbathe for mental and physical health, but I also need the grounding peace that is watching bumblebees make wildflowers droop as they pollinate each one.

My mental health is always much better whenever I’m doing outside sports. Enjoy skiing and hiking to keep active and happy! I’ve found myself much less stressed and anxious when I’m out with my family or friends! It’s so nice that Davis has so many outdoor activities and park spaces and especially the arboretum!!

How do you stay healthy outside?

I struggle with many chronic illnesses, so doing a lot of activity is difficult for me. However, as of late, I’ve decided that I want to be more physically active and better my mental health. I take my two year old yellow lab out on walks around the green belts in North Davis. I’ve been incorporating more running everyday into my routine, and I haven’t felt this great physically in a long time!

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I struggle with both my physical and mental health. Winter here was hard for me last quarter. But as soon as the sun started shining, I grew more motivated and decided I wanted to change my lifestyle in a positive way. Going outside for walks and runs has been so lovely, and it’s keeping me lively! I’ve learned to appreciate the outdoors in a different way than I have before, and I can’t get enough of it!

How do you stay healthy outside?

I am on the track and field team here at Davis so I am able to get outside for some exercise everyday at practice. It is a really nice break from indoor classes and labs and always boosts my mood. I also make sure to go on walks in the arboretum or just stop to take a few deep breaths of fresh air between classes on busy days. It helps keep me grounded and focused.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

Connecting to nature and getting fresh air has been proven to improve your mental health in many ways. It’s relaxing to see the plants and animals and it allows you to get your heart rate up without worrying about waiting to use a machine at the gym or running a certain distance. Sometimes it’s better for your mind and body to take a long stroll. Especially here at Davis with so many beautiful trails to take. Also studying outside and changing your learning center environment can improve retention. In the picture I submitted our guest lecturer had to present remotely so I took the opportunity to move class outside for the day. It was a very refreshing start to my day and I got to see the arboretum ducklings.

How do you stay healthy outside?

One way I enjoy staying healthy outside is by participating in dragon boat. Dragon boat is an outdoor water sport in which people come together to paddle in a boat. Practices are usually held either in a lake, channel, or estuary. This is a great way to be away from screens and surrounded by other people and nature at the same time.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I believe it's important to spend time outside because humans were made to interact with the outdoors. For example, we can only get Vitamin D from the sun, which is outside. If we were inside all day, we wouldn't get this vital nutrient. I also believe that there is some intrinsic value in being surrounded by nature. Being surrounded by nature can have a calming effect on people which can be useful if someone is dealing with stress.

I take morning walks in my neighborhood before starting the workday, often doing loops in a nearby public park. On weekends, I try to explore a new area on foot. I am trying to invite a friend or family member to join me more often now, too.

I love to sit outside and do my homework by where I live with my blanket and some snacks. I always notice that when I do my homework outside, I feel refreshed and more motivated to work harder on my assignments. It brings me much joy to have a "main character" moment outside on the grass listening to music and working on homework. I love going on hikes as well and getting some exercise in as well! I also enjoy my job as a tour guide where I get to give guests and visitors a chance to see the campus. It not only makes me happy helping others but I also get to do it outside!

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

Its important to me because it helps me mental health. I notice that during the pandemic, I really stayed home and never went anywhere, which really drained my mood. But when I actually decided to change and got outside, my mindset and mood changed completely. Whenever I feel down or upset, I know that going outside for a simple walk or just sitting on a bench outside, really helps me reset my mindset.

My brother and I used to play outside together as kids, but now we just spend time in our backyard to read or watch youtube.

It’s important to me because my life needs a balance between the indoors and outdoors. As much as I like to be inside to watch movies or play video games, I can do even more things outside. I like to spend time outdoors with my friends and family. Even when plans go awry I love making memories with them outside. A 10 mile hike in the rain seemed daunting, but halfway through we made it to a misty meadow and captured the photo I submitted.

I grew up going to state and national parks often with my family and scout groups. I am so grateful for those experiences, now every time I am in an outdoor space I am at my happiest and I feel my stress melting away.

I go on long walks around by the arboretum with squirrels and turkeys, and the putah creek trail where I occasionally go swimming in the fresh water further upstream. I swim with river otters and fish, and hike alongside peacocks and other wild birds! I love that animals are protected and appreciated here in Davis, I’ve occasionally brought my cat along with me on a walk or two in her harness and she loves rolling around in the dirt trails that follow the creek path.

Being outdoors grounds you physically, and connects you to the world around you. Physical health ties in with emotional and spiritual wellness, so spending time outside is a great way to process the stress of daily life that surrounds college life.

I love to walk miles around William Land Park with my dogs daily. I work out, drink lots of water and spend as much time outside as possible.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

It helps with my mental health, keeps me happy and motivated, and nature is just beautiful all around so it really helps me stay on track when I am working out, outside.

How do you stay healthy outside?

I Love picking a different destination every week to go visit and explore in my area. There is so much outdoor beauty that we miss in our own big backyard. On my list are parks, wildlife/nature reserves, lakes, local pick-ur-own-farms, arboretums, botantical gardens, zoos, adventure parks, etc. The options are endless. I just punch in my google maps outdoor activities near me and away I go!

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

Spending time outdoors is my zen time. Connecting with nature is connecting with mother Earth. We can not forget our first mother the one that offers us everything we need to survive, so spending time in nature, making that connection and admiring her beauty raises her positive energy and mine pushing out unwanted negative energy. I make a point to get out at least once a week but if I am having a tough day I will drop everything and head out, just 15 minutes will set me back on track, but I like to take an hour or two. ;) It is by far my number one stress relief.

How do you stay healthy outside?

I run or walk in the Arboretum every day. Whether it’s with my running group, my husband, or a friend, I find that getting out and moving in the Arboretum first thing in the morning always has a way of starting my day off on the right foot.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

Before the pandemic, I think I took for granted how important getting out in nature each day was to my health and well-being. Since then, however, the pandemic has really called that into focus for me. I know it has for others, too, as I’ve heard so many touching stories from our community members. It’s been a healing place for me and I feel deeply grateful knowing it’s been a source of respite for so many others, as well.

How do you stay healthy outside?

I enjoy running and walking outside especially during springtime when the weather is so pretty. I usually go around the neighborhood and go to parks, I also walk my daughter to school which we enjoyed together. Sometimes I bring some equipment in the park and do some workout.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

Spending time outside is the only way for us to connect to nature and experience it. It’s a way to uplift spirit, unwind and find peace from a busy schedule. Also a good opportunity to spend quality time with family especially where there is limited internet access just to get away from social media distraction.

I love sitting on the big lawn in Segundo in front of the Area Service desk. I also like to ride my bike to the Arboretum.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

It helps to calm me and a sense of peace. I love to stop and admire the trees, flowers, and animals. My dog and I spend nearly every lunch hour laying on the grass and knitting.

Sometimes just going out for walk or having a picnic outside cheers me up. It doesn't even have to be anything active.

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I love the sun and just feeling the warmth. I also like listening and admiring nature. Helps make me feel grounded.

I love to garden at the Ecological Garden on campus!

Why is it important for you to spend time outside?

I feel peaceful when I'm outside in the garden, and I enjoy sharing the food, flowers and beauty of the garden with everyone on campus. I love being outside as the garden changes throughout the year, and continually learning by slowing down and observing the ecosystem around me. Gardening can be hard work, and I love that it keeps me active and strong both physically and mentally.
