Tobacco Cessation Project

As a means to help carry out our mission of becoming a smoke and tobacco free campus, the UCDMC Emergency Department has implemented a Tobacco Cessation project.

In the emergency department, students from the Emergency Medicine Research Associates Program (EMRAP) are approaching patients and referring those that identify as smokers to the Quitline service if they are interested. For patient’s that would like to be referred to the Quitline, we also offer them smoke-free, nicotine lozenges and “Quit Kits” which contain various quitting resources. Visitors and staff are also able to receive these free nicotine lozenges from the front desk of the emergency department.

Additionally, each morning EMRAP interns complete cigarette butt counts around the emergency department to estimate the prevalence of smoking and assess the impact that our project may be having.
